Child - New application

Create an account on the Australian Passports Office website and follow the prompts to generate a form. Once you have answered all the questions, you will be able to download and print the form.

You will need three Australian standard passport photos. Please refer to the photo guidelines.

Do not take your photos at a photo booth, go to a photographer. Please discuss the requirements with the photographer and request the unedited digital format of your picture along with the hard copies.

Photos must be less than six months old.

Do not attach the photos to to the form with paperclips, staples, tape or glue. Leave them loose and we will affix them to your form.

The Guarantor must sign Section 11 of the application form and write on the back of one of your child's photos: “This is a true photo of [child's full name]”, and then sign underneath.

Your Guarantor must:

• Be over 18 years old
• Not be related to the child by birth or marriage
• Know the child for at least a year (for babies under a year old, a few months will be accepted)
• Not live at the same address as the child

The Guarantor can be one of two types:

• Type A: an Australian citizen
• Type B: a foreign citizen that holds one of the approved professions

1. Proof of citizenship for the child:

If your child was born in Australia, you must provide their original Australian Birth Certificate and one of the following:

• One of the child's previous Australian passports, valid for at least two years
• One  parent's Australian birth certificate
• One  parent's Australian passport that was issued before the child's birth and valid for at least two years
• One  parent's Australian citizenship certificate issued before the child's birth
• The child's own Australian citizenship certificate if you have none of the above

If your child was born outside of Australia, you must provide their original Australian Citizenship Certificate and their original foreign birth certificate. Please note:

• If the birth certificate is not in English, you must also provide an official translation.
• If your child was born in the EU, you can request the international ("plurilingüe" in Spanish) birth certificate from the registry for free; this does not need to be translated.

 

2. Proof of identity for the lodging parent

You must provide original valid photo ID (passport, EU national ID or residence card, drivers licence).

The lodging parent is the parent who attends the appointment to submit the application.

 

3. Proof of address for the lodging parent

You must provide one document that has your name and your current address (these do not need to be translated). These may be:

• Your Spanish DNI or NIE with your current address on the back
• Empadronamiento certificate 
• Utility bill or bank statement

 

Please note, all documents must be original. Photocopies and certified copies are not accepted.

If you do not have the original documents physically with you, these can be presented by a third party at any Australian Passport Office (within Australia), or Embassy/Consulate/High Commission overseas.

You must book an appointment to come in to the embassy. There is no walk-in service.

At least one parent must lodge the application in person. No one else can submit the child's application on behalf of the parents.

Children aged 15 years and younger are not required to attend.

Children aged 16-17 years must attend the appointment with the lodging parent.

The lodging parent does not have to be an Australian citizen. Both parents are welcome to attend, however, only one parent is required to lodge a child’s application.

The passport fees are paid at the appointment, by card only.
We accept debit or credit cards, Visa or MasterCard. We cannot accept cash, bank transfers, cheques or American Express cards.

It is important that you:

• do NOT fold your application
• do NOT use staples, paper clips or anything else that may damage your photos
• do NOT attach your photos to the form
• bring all original documents, not copies

Please allow 6 weeks for your application to be processed. Some applications may be processed faster but we cannot guarantee anything less than 6 weeks.

Once we receive your new passport, we will send it via DHL courier to your address, if you selected the courier option. If you indicated that you want to collect your passport at the embassy, we will email you to arrange an appointment for collection.

Please note, your old Australian passport will be automatically cancelled 30 days after the new one is issued. Using a cancelled travel document may be a criminal offence under subsection 32(1) of the Australian Passports Act 2005. This attracts penalties of imprisonment or a fine or both. If you will be out of the country for longer than 30 days after your new passport is due to arrive, please let us know in advance.

There is no expedited service for applications lodged overseas, this service is only available within Australia.

If you need your child's passport in less than six weeks, you may be eligible for an Emergency Passport. Evidence of urgency (i.e. travel itinerary, visa appointment confirmation or letter from your employer) is required.
